They hunt their prey in the dark by using their keen sense of smell - snakes constantly flick their long tongues to sense smell. Some snakes like the pit vipers have heat-sensitive organs which can locate victims using the prey's body heat. Other desert snakes include species of kingsnake. These snakes are not venomous, and prey on other snakes which they kill by constriction.
